Nepalese Handicrafts: Woolen Home Goods from the Himalayas

Nepal, located in the southern foothills of the Himalayas, is an agricultural nation where 80% of the population is engaged in farming. It is one of the least developed and impoverished countries in the world, with 80.6% of its nationals identifying as Hindus. In the face of poverty, the people of Nepal have turned to their own resources. They shear their sheep and use the wool to create felt by boiling it in water and then pressing it.

This felt is used to make a variety of home goods. The designs are simple and unadorned, with a slightly rough texture. In terms of design, these creations might not stand up to the scrutiny of professional designers. The Nepalese people’s creations stem from a primal aesthetic impulse, which can be described as charmingly unattractive. How can we describe this unique feeling? It’s akin to a boy in love perceiving a girl’s naivety, yet finding it endearing to the point of melting the heart.

These tiger-shaped coasters are so unattractive that they have won my heart. These cushions, on the other hand, are more in line with mainstream domestic aesthetics.
